Check Federal Prison Releases

To find someone released from the Federal Bureau of Prisons system, use the federal locator only when the person entered federal prison custody. Northampton County has no identified BOP institution, so the search is tied to the named person and federal case, not a local prison building. A federal release result can document the end of BOP custody while supervised release continues or another agency assumes custody. It does not verify an ordinary county jail departure. The sound route matches the register number or identity, reads the release date and location label, checks the federal court record when needed, and keeps federal custody separate from state, county, and immigration systems.

Federal Prison Release Paths

The BOP system holds people serving federal prison sentences. No BOP institution was identified in Northampton County. A person connected to Northampton may still have a federal record because the federal case arose in the Eastern District of North Carolina, because federal authorities assumed custody, or because the person plans to return to the county after release. Placement can be anywhere in the federal system.

A BOP result with location “RELEASED” and a past release date confirms that the recorded person left BOP custody on that date. It does not show that federal supervised release ended. It also does not rule out state, local, or immigration custody after the federal event. A future date is projected and can change. The label “UNKNOWN” means the confinement term has not been determined in the locator, not that release already occurred.

Note: No federal prison operates in Northampton County, so use the person-level BOP record rather than a county facility list.

Confirm a Federal Prison Release

Use the official BOP Inmate Locator. An agency identifier is best. The tool accepts a BOP register number, DCDC number, FBI number, or INS number. A name search can be refined by age, race, and sex. These filters help, but the user must still compare the result to known case facts.

  1. Choose number or name search. Prefer the BOP register number when available.
  2. Enter exact identifying data. Add the permitted refiners to reduce false matches.
  3. Read the full result row. Check name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location.
  4. Interpret the date. A past date with RELEASED is historical; a future date remains projected.
  5. Check the next legal stage. Use the federal docket for supervised release or a detention order when those facts matter.

The Northampton County release lookup is the better starting point when the last custodian is uncertain. BOP should not be used as a general backup roster for a Northampton County jail booking.

Read Federal Release Results

BOP locator fields are compact, so each one needs a narrow reading. The register number is the strongest key for matching repeat or similar names. Location reports BOP status, not a complete map of every possible custodian. The release date is tied to BOP's record and can be past, future, or unknown.

Locator fieldWhat it establishes
Name and register numberThe federal record identity
Age, race, and sexMatch aids, not proof by themselves
Release datePast release or a future projected event
Location: RELEASEDNo longer in BOP custody on the recorded date
Location: institutionCurrent federal prison placement shown by BOP
UNKNOWNConfinement term not determined in the locator

A RELEASED label is narrower than “free.” Federal supervised release may remain, and another agency may hold the person. Report the result as release from BOP custody and identify the recorded date. That phrasing preserves what the source proves.

Federal Locator Record Scope

BOP's locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present. Events before that period require a different archive route. BOP's records help explains how to seek older material through the National Archives using full name, date of birth or approximate age, race, and approximate prison dates. The archive is a historical records path, not a live custody check.

BOP's locator record help documents the scope shown in the captured image.

Federal Release Records Contact

The locator is the first public route for a sentenced federal prisoner. There is no local BOP records office in Northampton County because no BOP institution was identified there. If the locator is incomplete, use BOP's official records guidance or the federal court record tied to the case. A records request should name the person, register number, case details, and specific release or movement fields sought.

Federal Custody Channels

Sentenced prison: BOP Inmate Locator
Pre-1982 history: National Archives route in BOP help
Federal pretrial or court release: Federal docket and signed detention or release order
US Marshals records: Specific FOIA request
Victim notices: DOJ Victim Notification System for enrolled qualifying victims

No open public US Marshals released-person locator was identified. USMS holds prisoner-in-custody records and accepts sufficiently specific FOIA requests, subject to exemptions. A broad name query without a case, date range, or identifying detail may not settle the event.

Request Federal Release Records

A federal records request should begin with the agency that controlled the stage in question. BOP is the source for sentenced-prison custody. USMS may hold prisoner-in-custody records tied to transport or pretrial detention. The federal court maintains orders and docket events. A request should include the full name, known register or case number, date range, and the specific release, transfer, or custody record sought. Ask for existing records rather than a conclusion about the person's status.

For a BOP event before 1982, the National Archives route described in the locator help is more suitable. Provide the full name, date of birth or approximate age, race, and approximate prison dates. A lack of a modern locator result does not erase an older federal history. For a current or recent matter, compare the locator's date with the signed court order and any USMS record because each may measure a separate act.

Note: Federal court, USMS, and BOP records may carry different dates because they document different custody and legal events.

Northampton Federal Court Release

Northampton County is in the Eastern District of North Carolina. A federal court docket can document a detention hearing, release order, sentence, revocation, or supervised-release action. For a federal pretrial defendant who has not entered BOP sentenced custody, the court and US Marshals routes may be more relevant than the BOP locator.

A signed order supplies legal authority, but it may not show the exact moment custody staff completed release. The BOP locator supplies the end of BOP custody for covered sentenced prisoners. USMS records can address marshals custody. Put the order date, physical custody event, and later supervision on a timeline rather than treating one date as every stage.

Supervised release is federal court supervision after prison; it is not continued BOP prison custody and does not end merely because the locator says RELEASED.

Later Federal Custody Episodes

A revocation event can return a person to custody after an earlier BOP release. That does not make the first release date false. It creates a later episode that should be reported separately. The same principle applies when a state or immigration authority takes custody after BOP. Check the chronology and name each custodian rather than treating the latest search result as a full lifetime history.

Search the register number again and compare the new admission, release, and court dates. One person may have several valid federal custody episodes.

Federal Release Notification Limits

The Department of Justice Victim Notification System provides custody and release information to enrolled qualifying victims. Access uses a Victim ID and PIN. It is not an open public signup locator. A person without enrollment should use BOP and the federal court sources rather than attempting to enter that restricted channel.

The DOJ victim-notification source is represented in the research image below.

The system is a notice channel for authorized users, not a permanent public release certificate or a replacement for the BOP locator.

Separate Northampton Federal Custody

A federal charge does not turn the Northampton County Detention Center into a BOP prison. A person can move from local detention to US Marshals custody, enter BOP after sentencing, leave BOP for supervised release, or transfer to another authority. Each stage has a different source. The county jail confirms its own release or transfer; the federal court explains the order; BOP records sentenced-prison custody; USMS handles its records; ICE handles civil immigration detention.

Names alone are not enough. Preserve agency identifiers, dates, and status labels. If BOP says RELEASED but a later state or ICE record shows custody, both events may be accurate. The proper statement is that BOP custody ended on the listed date and a later system may have taken control. This avoids turning a custodian-specific fact into a claim about a person's full present status.
